Life at Camp Rasak: A Peek Into the Wild Side!

Ever wondered what it’s like to be an orangutan in the wild? Well, thanks to you—our amazing orangutan champions—our furry friends at Camp Rasak get to live their best jungle lives!

Camp Rasak is an orangutan release camp in the Lamandau Reserve in Borneo. It’s a special place where released orangutans can live freely in their natural habitat. Our friends at the Orangutan Foundation keep a watchful eye to ensure they are safe, happy, and thriving in their natural home.

Here’s the latest scoop from Camp Rasak, where some of our favorite orangutans are making big moves in their journey back to the wild!

Logos is one step closer to the wild!

It’s an exciting time for gorgeous Logos, who has recently arrived at Camp Rasak in the soft-release forested area! Here Logos will spend time adjusting to life in the wild and honing his forest skills.

Logos was a little shy to leave his transport crate at first and begin exploring, but is slowly warming up to his new surroundings. He was very quickly greeted by Ariel, Acuy, Labetty and Lego, hoping to make him feel welcome. They joined him up in the canopy on his first day, but Logos wasn’t a fan! He headed straight back down to his human carers for comfort.

The good news is Logos is slowly warming up to forest life and his new friends. After a few days Logos was much more confident to head straight up into the canopy, forage for food and rest.

We are so happy to see this sweet boy progress in his journey to forest freedom, and are so grateful for your support in making that happen! ๐Ÿงก

Baby Lego is blossoming

Do you remember little baby Lego? This gorgeous orangutan was born last year to mum Labetty. Labetty came to camp early one morning with a precious little surprise. A baby boy!

Snack time! Labetty and baby Lego chowing down on some bananas.

Labetty and Lego quickly settled into their life together, pairing up with fellow mum and bub duo Amina and Albie. Fast forward to today, and we’re happy to share that they are both thriving!

Labetty and Lego are often spotted heading to camp, foraging for food and resting. Lego is also a fan of sitting high on mum’s back which makes for some very cute photos.

Usually Labetty tends to avoid Acuy, who sometimes chases her. But now, much to everyone's surprise, she’s warming up to her! She no longer darts away when she encounters Acuy. When they head to camp for some extra food, Labetty has been spotted offering Lego to Acuy to hold! This is unusual behaviour for orangutans and the staff will be interested to see how this develops.

We are so thrilled to see that they are doing so well, and can’t wait to see Lego’s cheeky antics as he continues to grow healthy and strong. ๐ŸŒณ

Boy finds forest freedom

You might also remember Boy, our very brave and very courageous December APE Achiever of the month. This precious boy has recently recovered from an injury to his finger.

Not only is his finger well and truly healed– but he’s made the next big step in his journey to forest freedom. Boy has now been released into the wild!

Boy’s first moments of forest freedom as he leaves his transport crate.

With solid forest skills and endless confidence, Boy was ready to be moved from the soft-release area at Camp Rasak to his new home. At 10 years old, Boy cleared his health checks with flying colours and began his journey to the forested release area across the river. Boy immediately loved his new home, and was seen by our friends at Orangutan Foundation settling into forest freedom.

Big and heartfelt thank you to our amazing community of orangutan champions, for giving these incredible orangutans a second chance at life in the wild. With your help, they can live wild and free in a safe forest home, protected and cared for ๐Ÿ’ž
