Exciting News: Citrawan the orangutan has had a baby!

And not just any mum, but a proud new mama to a beautiful baby girl orangutan named Canur. Born in August, little Canur is Citrawan’s first infant. 

After a smooth, peaceful birth, Citrawan took to her cosy nest to rest and recover with her precious baby. For several days, Citrawan quite literally 'nested' with Canur. They bonded in the safety of their jungle home.

As the team closely monitored Citrawan and her newborn, they noticed a drop in her usual activity, including foraging. This raised some concern, so the team helped by providing extra nutrition for both mum and baby. They made sure Citrawan had healthy fruits, veggies, and boiled eggs for protein. They also gave her katuk leaf extract to boost her milk production. 

By the end of September, Citrawan was back to her active self, foraging in the forest with Canur. Canur spends most of her time clinging to Citrawan’s chest and stomach, suckling and sleeping. Most of Canur’s feeding happens during the night, when the two are tucked away safely in their nest. 

As you can imagine, Citrawan is fiercely protective of her newborn, often hiding Canur from the team. She's still getting used to moving around with her baby. But, she is slowly getting the hang of holding and carrying Canur through the forest.

While Citrawan is focused on her new baby, she still enjoys socialising with her orangutan friends. She’s been seen playing with Siti and Sudin, and sharing meals with Yin. 

You may remember Citrawan. She was a star student in Jungle School and part of our adoption program. She was released into the Bukit Tigapulah Ecosystem December 2020, with her good friend Femi. Since then, Citrawan has been absolutely thriving in her jungle home.
