Championing Young Conservationists

Donor Chris Burns is championing the next generation of Indonesian conservationists through his sponsorship of the Orangutan Caring Scholarship program.

In the heart of Central Kalimantan, a promising young mind is on the path to making a profound impact on the conservation of Indonesia's precious wildlife and ecosystems. Putri Imeldha Senewe Asim is one of six students recently awarded an Orangutan Caring Scholarship to support her studies in Forestry at Palangka Raya University. Her scholarship was made possible thanks to the generous support of Chris Burns of the Reid Burns Foundation, who selected Putri from the final six to be the recipient of his named scholarship.

A passionate advocate for conservation, Chris understands the crucial role that education plays in securing a sustainable future for Indonesia's wildlife. His decision to sponsor the OCS program stems from his belief that empowering the next generation of Indonesian conservationists is essential for the preservation of forests and their inhabitants.

“I was particularly taken with the essay by Putri,” says Chris. “She captures the enthusiasm of youth which is critical for the ongoing success of the various conservation projects.”

As a Forestry major at Palangka Raya University, Putri is determined to make a difference in the conservation field. Her enthusiasm and dedication have not only earned her the OCS scholarship but also the admiration and support of donors like Chris.

Since its inception in 2006, the Orangutan Caring Scholarships program has awarded 274 scholarships to students pursuing studies in biology, forestry, and veterinary science, empowering them to become strong advocates for forest and wildlife conservation.

The OCS program is jointly operated by the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) and implementing partners including the Orangutan Information Center (OIC), Yayasan Palung (YP), Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF) and the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP).

In Central Kalimantan, the OCS program is implemented by the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF)  in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture at Palangka Raya University. By providing educational funding and increasing awareness about orangutan conservation, the program aims to cultivate a generation of conservationists who are proactive in voicing and taking positive actions for orangutan conservation.

Chris’s sponsorship of Putri is a testament to his commitment to this cause. As he aptly puts it, “Education and understanding of environmental and sustainability issues give young Indonesians the tools they need to create positive change and effectively protect forests and wildlife.”

Through the support of donors like Chris Burns, the OCS program continues to thrive, fostering future leaders in conservation and ensuring that Indonesia's wildlife and ecosystems are protected for generations to come.
