Our team has rescued this subadult orangutan! His immediate trauma is over, but he has a long road to recovery. Can you chip in to help his journey back to freedom? We can only imagine the horror he’s experienced in his young life, from seeing his mother brutally killed to living in this hell hole for untold years.
Although freed from this dirt prison he’s languished in for years, he has a long way to go before he’s truly free.

Our rescue team and a team from the Ministry of Forestry worked through the day and night to rescue the orangutan from an abandoned zoo on an island off the northeast coast of Java. He was hesitant and cautious as they approached, no doubt traumatised by all he’s gone through.
Before leaving the island, our team conducted an urgent medical check, taking blood for further checks, weighing him, checking the state of his teeth, and more.
After he was deemed well enough to travel, the young orangutan was placed into a transportation crate for transfer to the mainland. He’s now at a wildlife rescue centre in Yogyakarta, but he’s still a long way from home.

After his long journey from the island to the mainland, he needs time to recover, regain his strength and be ready for the next stage of his journey to our rescue centre. Our team will watch him closely to ensure he’s ready to travel to our Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance rescue centre in East Kalimantan.
We don’t know when he’ll be ready to travel and how long his rehabilitation will then take once he’s at our rescue centre. He has years of recovery ahead of him before he can be truly free.
